Keith Raymond asked:

Sociologist and anthropologists trace back the Mayan hammock some 3000 years. It made its appearance arrived in the Yucatán more than two centuries before the Spanish conquest. As the Mayan cultural grew in dominance, the hammock became synonymous with the Mayan civilization.  One could say that the Mayan hammock is what helped their civilization thrive. The hammock provided the Mayans with security and protection as they slept. The Mayan hammock protected the sleeper from snakes and other ground crawling dwellers as well as raising the sleeper above mud and other unhygienic conditions. An elevated sleeping area also exposed the sleeper to cool breezes necessary for staying comfortable in the humid rainforests of Central America. The fist Mayan hammocks were woven from the fibrous bark of the hamack tree before the evolution to more standard material found today.

The Mayan hammocks of today are found throughout the region and Southern Mexico. In Mexico, authentic Mayan hammocks are still made by Mayan women and families in villages surrounding the capital city of the Yucatán, Merida, and are sold throughout the world as well as locally.

The Mayan hammocks are still very much a family business. Using two needles and a loom, it can take several weeks to make a decent sized Mayan hammock. Made in the small villages of the Yucatan, the Mayan hammock trade contributes to the economic independence and self sufficiency of the Mayan communities. The finished Mayan hammocks are gathered by wholesalers before they make it to market and your favorite spot.

Mayan hammocks are made with cotton or nylon string. The most comfortable Mayan hammocks are made of a cotton weave which makes them very flexible yet incredibly supportive. Most cotton Mayan hammocks do not use spreader bar allowing the hammock to cradle or contour to your body for even greater comfort. This feature has also made them especially practical as a natural infant cradle to gently rock their children to sleep.

Mayan hammocks are extremely light weight, but have the ability to hold large amounts of weight.  Mayan hammocks can be used outdoors on a stand or easily strung up between two trees. With their beautiful, vibrant colors, Mayan hammocks are the perfect summer accessory. Their comfort is unmatched and their colors bring a sense of serenity to your backyard and patio environment. For those looking for those elusive outdoor accessory, Mayan hammocks bring a unique decorative touch to your outdoor space. Mayan hammocks make for a great garden hammock too.

Mayan hammocks can also be accessorized with pillows or Mexican serapes. Serapes are handcrafted striped cotton blankets that are synonymous with the post colonial Mexican culture. Wrap a serape as you lie in your Mayan hammock or lay one out on the grass for an afternoon snooze or picnic. These colorful Mexican serapes can also be used indoors to add a touch of Mexican decorative style.

Mayan hammocks can also be strung up indoors as well, by inserting hooks in wall studs or ceiling beams. They are great for all climates and are especially convenient for small apartments and dorm rooms for extra seating or even an extra place to sleep. They can also be used to store goods like sleeping bags and packs while traveling or camping.

The general rule is to get the largest hammock you can because the larger your hammock is, the more comfortable you will feel when using it. Mayan hammocks are woven with an open style, with no spreader bar, which allows the hammock to expand and contract freely. This means that larger size hammocks will provide more strands in the same amount of space when stretched out to your body’s length. For example, a tall person will have to stretch a single hammock all the way out like a net, to lie in it. On the other hand, a king size Mayan hammock will open effortlessly and provide extra webbing even for a tall or large person. This means the weave will remain tight so the Mayan hammock looks and feels like a solid piece of cloth, yet gently rapping the extra webbing around your body, providing a superior level of comfort.

With summer on the way, there is no better way to make the most of those lazy days of summer than with colorful Mayan hammocks. If you plan to entertain with afternoon barbeques and backyard picnics, you can expect your Mayan hammock to be the hit of the party.

Mayan Hammocks are among the quality of sways there are. Some people even label these hammocks as the Nature’s sway.  They are comfortable and convenient. Hammocks accessories such as hanging kits, pillows, blankets are more than a décor.

They can be great accessories to spend time while enjoying the cool breeze. According to many who have tried Hammocks, Mayan brand is among the best because it is barely out there when you use it. Its supportive design is matchless because it 100% handmade on vertical looms by weavers. Other terms for hammocks are Yucatan hammocks and Mexican hammocks.

All types of Mayan Hammocks are hand-woven by the natives in Yucatan and Quintana Roo in Mexico City. When you witness the artworks even the hammocks accessories, you would realize that the vertical looms are simple to weave while the colors, although varied, are actually patterns produced by the movements of the hands weaving. The same goes out to hammock accessories.

For the benefit of those who are not familiar with hammocks, they are actually similar to swings made of specialized fabric. They can be placed in the veranda, in the garden, between two strong trees on the beach or just outside the house.

To use the Mayan hammocks, simply hang it between two mighty trees. If such trees are your favorites or in some way memorable to you, the hours spent on the hammock will even be valuable. For outdoor use, select the rope that is polypropylene for its synthetic material which is resistant to mildew. Nonetheless, such rope shall easily wear out when exposed longer under direct sunlight.

To care for the hammock accessories, even though their brand is Mayan, it is still best to care for them. If nobody is using it, better keep them indoor. Pillows and blankets should not be left outside anywhere even on hammocks, garden chairs and garden benches. Mayan Hammocks are available in varied sizes. For people who desire to share the nature’s sway with their beloved behalf or a child, family size hammocks fit, and so do hammocks of 54 by 84 size [in inches]. However, single size hammocks are usually 45 inches wide and 76 to 84 inches long.

Hammocks are beneficial to all people including children when accompanied or guided by an adult. For the elderly, hammocks should be in such a way and form that it does not endanger the health or safety of the elderly. No problem with hammocks accessories for they can always be used by anybody anywhere.

To ensure safety, Mayan Hammocks should be placed at waist length or lower to make entry and exit simple for them. The hammock ropes should sag slightly as the elderly mounts the swing to avoid making the body in tip-over position in lying down. While on the hammock, let them sink down gently.

Safety traps must also be used when the hammocks have spreader bars. Traps can let the hammock hang from a stand when not in use. This is to avoid being tipped-over. Better yet, select Mayan Hammocks that do not have spreader bars. Spreader bars only make hammocks less stable and vulnerable to people in tipping over even when they stretch the fabric to expose the sleeping section.

MJ Marks asked:

Everybody loves a hammock. Hanging out in the cool shade or relaxing with a nice tall ice cold lemonade next to the pool is just about as good as it gets. Life is stressful enough, so taking time to relax is essential. Hatteras Hammocks focuses on helping people do just that. They started business almost 40 years ago, founded by a Mr. Perkins, who wanted to make a really good hammock. He has succeed. Over the years the company has continued to create products that have quality components: ropes, spreader bars, and strong stand welds come standard. So let’s take a closer look at some of the products that Hatteras Hammocks puts out.

First off are the classic rope Hatteras Hammocks. The DuraCord rope used to make these is soft like cotton and is made with double latch continuous weave. This makes the hammock really strong and reliable. This sort of rope also resists fading and stains. Hatteras also uses hardwood bars for spreaders that are coated in waterproof marine grade spar varnish for maximum protection against the elements. The metal parts used are coated in zinc so they don’t rust. The DuraCord rope hammock weighs 14 pounds and can hold up to 450 pounds. Color is an option as well. They make these in white, red, blue, orange, and dark blue green.

Speaking of strong hammocks, if you’ve ever been in a hammock when it breaks then you know the value of strong construction. I learned this the hard way one time while hanging out with my one year old son in a cheap hammock on the Oregon coast. We were happily hanging there when the rope gave way and we went crashing down to the ground. What’s funny is that my spouse was recording us on the video camera when the fun happened. At least someone got a good laugh out of it. I didn’t. It hurt. If I had had one of the DuraCord rope Hatteras hammocks, I would have been spared the trauma and indignity of it all. Oh well.

Then there are the woven Hatteras hammocks. These are much more comfortable in my opinion than the rope hammocks because your body is supported more evenly. Plus, you still get the free flow of air like you get from a rope hammock. They are attractive and strong. The same quality materials go into constructing these as in the other Hatteras hammocks. Solid hardwood spreader bars coated with spar varnish and zinc plated hardware. Two people can easily get on these together as they amply sized.

Finally, Hatteras Hammocks makes large quilted hammocks that offer the maximum amount of comfort and quality. Getting onto one of these is a real treat. The same DuraCord rope is used at the ends, and the fabric is filled with cushioning poly batting. They use rust free brass around the edges for the hammock itself to be supported by, and the spreader bars are coated with multiple layers of varnish. The fabric resists mold and mildew and yet remains soft over time.

Grab a cold drink and your favorite book and spend some time in one of the many Hatteras Hammocks. The quality and comfort of your life will soar. Happy hammocking!

David H. Urmann asked:

There are many variations of hammocks but the most common is the rope hammock. Learn about the different types and basic tips on putting it up.

Rope Hammocks

Hammocks are fabrics or pieces of cloth used as slings for resting or sleeping while hanging above the ground. It usually consists of two or more fabric panels, cloth panels or thin ropes expanded with wires between four firm points like posts or trees. Hammocks are now famous around the globe for relaxation. In addition, it is popular in camping trips.

It is protected against rain, root and mold. Hammocks have many different types according to materials used, like nylon, nylon rope and single nylon hammocks. A nylon hammock is made of quality craftsmanship and durable materials. Nylon ropes are elastic, lustrous and stronger. Single nylon ropes are about 7 feet long and 4 feet wide.

Tips on Making Rope Hammocks

Materials include polyester ropes for long-lasting hammocks, 2lbs hammock ropes, 1 gauge stick, 1 large netting shuttle, 2 rings about 2 to 3 inches in diameter, 2 hardwood bars (33 inches long and 1 ½ by 1 ½ inches).

Step 1

Measure and cut about 1 or 2 pieces of rope. Tie the ends together into a square knot. Hang the rope on a post, doorknob or tree. Get the netting shuttle and grip it in point end up. Twist the cord a few times around the netting shuttle and tie the end into a loop on the post, doorknob or tree.

Step 2

Use the gauge stick to twist the netting shuttle cord around it. Pass the netting shuttle throughout the loop and grip the cord tightly. Create a half hitch and continue creating loops until the gauge stick has about 15 to 20 total loops.

Step 3

Take out the gauge stick from the loops and grip it directly underneath. Rotate the ropes such that the netting shuttle is on the left side. Get the netting shuttle cord down to the front portion of gauge stick and bring it at the back, placing it throughout the first loop. Move around the first loop with the netting shuttle cord and create a hitch. Repeat the movement until it is completed on all sides.

Step 4

Place more than 10 ropes around the netting shuttle when it runs out. Tighten the free end in the square knot to the first old hammock. Keep repeating step 3, creating rows of loops with a rope. Generally, the length will is approximately 7 feet if there are 50 to 55 rows.

Step 5

Cut the first loop and remove it. Change it with dowel to give it stability and maintain the rows smoothness while working on it. Get about 2 pieces of hardwood cut into 33 inches in length and 1 ½ by 1 ½ inches. Bore or drill each piece with 15 to 20 holes, making sure that it is not closer that 2 ½ inches from each other and that it is 1 ½ inches apart from each other.

Step 6

Gather about 40 pieces from a 50-inch long rope. Get a 2 inch ring and loop the initial cord through it. Run it equally through the ends of the cord via the first bored hole in the hardwood. Tighten an overhand knot and secure each piece of rope from the woven hammock.

Hammock Swings

Hammock swings are worktables or benches made from a cushion or rope webbing suspended from about two different secure points such as posts or trees. The gentle swinging motion of a hammock is truly enjoyable and relaxing. A hammock swings swiftly, making it a famous addition to numerous homes whether placed outdoors or indoors.
